Elementary School at Charlottesville Day School is the perfect combination of rigor and joy. Our teachers differentiate instruction for each child, meaning they actively plan for student interests, strengths, needs and styles of learning. Differentiating instruction to accommodate the different ways that students learn involves a hefty dose of common sense, as well as sturdy support in the theory and research of education (Tomlinson & Allan, 2000).

Savannah earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Virginia Tech and a Master of Teaching degree and Gifted Education certification from the University of Virginia, graduating with honors from both universities. More>

Spanish

Spanish

Foreign language learning improves listening abilities, memory function, creativity, and critical thinking skills. The CDS foreign language curriculum is actively-taught and integrates speaking, reading, writing, listening, and cultural activities. Elementary students learn Spanish vocabulary and communicative expressions, and fourth and fifth graders begin to learn basic Spanish grammar. Students in Middle School begin exploring Spanish grammar more in-depth and travel to a Spanish speaking country to increase fluency, explore customs, and provide meaning and purpose to learning the language. Students will have completed all of Spanish I curriculum and have moved into Spanish II curriculum by the time they finish 8th grade. The CDS foreign language program complements classroom instruction in math, science, social studies, and language arts.

Music

Music

CDS students are exposed to a challenging and joyful music program. Beginning in preschool and extending through Middle School, students sing, dance, play instruments, act, write music, and learn the fabric of numerous musical genres. All Elementary and Middle School students participate in reading and writing activities to develop musical literacy. Students learn the history of music and hear the works of legendary musicians and composers. Through whole school circles, choir, theatre productions and the multiple music groups including Beginner Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band, students are given numerous opportunities to perform. CDS embraces its music program as a great way to teach students the joy of learning and expand interests in mathematics, reading, and even social studies.

Physical Education and Wellness

Physical Education and Wellness

Fitness and wellness education at CDS encompasses mind, body, and spirit. In addition to the core curriculum, students participate in sports conditioning, team building activities, and sportsmanship classes. Benefits include refined motor skills and articulation, increased body awareness, ability to manage stress, and increased concentration and focus. CDS students learn to demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.

While participation in physical activity is part of an active lifestyle, it is only one part of a health-enhancing lifestyle. CDS students recognize the relationship between feeling good and regular physical activity, healthy food intake, and positive lifestyle choices. Healthy, balanced snacks and lunches are available to students during the day. CDS teachers are advocates of fitness and wellness. Because fitness and wellness is a way of life, CDS encourages students to make healthy lifestyle choices in their free time away from school. At CDS, students attain skills, knowledge, and attitudes that promote life-long health, physical activity, and productivity.

Fine Art

Fine Art

CDS students learn to recognize the difference in lines, forms and shapes and explore color values and symmetry. Art history is incorporated into weekly lessons, encouraging students to recognize artists, periods, techniques and different media. CDS students are given the confidence and comfort to develop their own personal ideas and create unique art. Students discuss the masterpieces but also discuss their own and their classmates’ creations. This gives students an opportunity to appreciate the work of others and to take turns in leadership roles. Students are given an opportunity to share their work with the school community.
