Position Overview

Charlottesville Day School seeks skilled, reflective, and collaborative teachers to join our faculty. CDS teachers are responsible for creating a warm, structured, and engaging classroom environment that supports students’ academic growth, curiosity, independence, and social-emotional development.

This position involves close collaboration with grade-level colleagues, specialists, learning support staff, and school leadership. CDS teachers are thoughtful practitioners who balance high expectations with love, care, curiosity, and respect for children as developing learners.

Primary Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Design and implement developmentally appropriate, explicit, engaging instruction aligned with CDS curricular goals
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners
  • Use formative and summative assessments to inform instruction and support student growth
  • Foster a classroom culture that emphasizes kindness, responsibility, curiosity, and perseverance

Student Support

  • Support students’ academic, social, and emotional development
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with families about student progress
  • Collaborate with learning specialists and counselors to support individual students

Collaboration and Community

  • Work closely with grade-level team members and specialists
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events
  • Contribute positively to the life of the school community

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain timely and accurate records, lesson plans, and assessments
  • Engage in ongoing professional growth and reflective practice
  • Uphold the mission, values, and policies of Charlottesville Day School

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Teaching experience at the elementary level strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of child development and elementary pedagogy
  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered learning
